The Mario Lombardo Research Prize has been awarded to a young ophthalmologist
The Mario Lombardo award has been assigned to Dr. Raffaella Gioia, a young ophthalmologist recently specialized at the Magna Graecia University of Catanzaro.
The celebration was held at the Regensight Research & Development Lab. in Reggio Calabria (Italy).
Dr. Gioia declared: “Keratoconus is a degenerative disease of the cornea of the eye that afflicts about 2% of the global population. It occurs between the ages of 10 and 20 and represents the primary cause of corneal transplantation in youth. For this reason, the disease has a severe impact on the quality of life of many young people and their families. Regensight’s theranostics technology aims at solving this problem and avoiding corneal transplantation.”
According to Marco Lombardo, the “purpose of the research award is to enhance the efforts of young researchers who are directly involved in the study and care of young people suffering from keratoconus and to transmit values centered on respect for patients“.
